What to look for
Common signs of a problem
- Regular trails along floors, walls or worktops
- Small piles of soil around cracks or paving
- Winged ants emerging indoors
- Repeated activity near food, sinks or warm equipment
Professional local help
Ant trails in kitchens, conservatories or around patios usually lead back to a nest or reliable food source. Correct identification matters because different ant species and nesting locations need different approaches.
What to look for
How we help
Identify the ant and trace the main movement routes
Locate likely nesting and feeding areas
Choose a treatment suited to the species and site
Explain cleaning and proofing steps that support control
Prevention and aftercare
Clean food residues, store sweet foods securely, seal suitable gaps after control and address moisture or damaged external pointing where colonies may establish.
A hidden ant investigation
The household had experienced ants for several years without knowing where they were coming from. The visible ants were only a small sign of a much larger concealed problem beneath the waterproof tiled floor.

The ants had established themselves within the foam board and excavated a network of holes and channels that allowed them to move unseen beneath the tiled surface. This concealed nest and route system explained why the problem had continued to return.
Treating only the ants that appeared above the floor would not have addressed the colony below. Understanding the floor construction and tracing the activity back to its source made it possible to plan a properly targeted solution.
Because the foam board had been extensively tunnelled, the affected tiled floor was ultimately taken up. A new board and tiles were then installed without the foam layer, removing the concealed network that the ants had been using beneath the floor.
This case demonstrates how readily insects can adapt to modern construction products. Materials and concealed voids intended to improve a building can unintentionally provide warmth, shelter and protected travel routes if pest risks are not considered during design, installation and later maintenance.
