Bird spikes and solar-panel proofing

Birds were using sheltered roof junctions and ledges as places to land and begin nesting. We installed carefully positioned bird spikes across the vulnerable areas, including the tight spaces around the roof abutment.

Correct coverage is important: leaving small gaps can simply move the birds to the next unprotected section. The aim is a discreet, durable barrier that discourages landing, roosting and future nesting without harming the birds.

We also completed a bird-spike installation on a building beside Lichfield Cathedral. Working in a prominent historic setting called for a neat, carefully positioned solution that protected the vulnerable roof edge without dominating the appearance of the building.

Pigeons also commonly nest in the warm, sheltered void beneath solar panels. Nesting material and accumulated pigeon guano can create an unpleasant hygiene hazard, contribute to blocked gutters and make ongoing roof maintenance more difficult.

Purpose-made mesh is secured around the panel perimeter to close the access gap while maintaining ventilation and avoiding unnecessary drilling through the solar panels. The proofing can be removed when access is required for solar-panel, roof or gutter maintenance, then securely refitted afterwards.

Before any proofing is fitted, the area must be checked for active nests and the work carried out at an appropriate time.
